Tracing Wildfire Emissions

Scientists with the European Space Agency, using data from the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography instrument aboard Agency’s “Environmental Satellite” known as ENVISAT have determined that the carbon monoxide hovering over Australia during the wildfire season largely originated from South American wildfires some 13 000 kilometres away.
The work exemplifies the capabilities of remote sensing in detailing transcontinental movement of air contaminants.
